Special Service Force Headquarters and Signal Squadron (SSF HQ and Sigs) (fr: Escadron du quartier general et des transmission, Force d’operations speciales) was created in April 1977 when the Special Service Force was formed in Petawawa by the amalgamation of units from 2 Combat Group and the Canadian Airborne Regiment. The official redesignation of 2 Combat Group Headquarters and Signal Squadron was eventually issued on 1 December 1978.[1]
In 1987 the French version of the unit name was amended to be Quartier général et Escadron des transmissions de la Force d’opérations spéciales.[2]
In the Fall of 1988 Canada committed to the United Nations Iran-Iraq Military Observer Group (UNIIMOG) mission and SSF Sigs supplied the majority of members deployed as part of 88 Signal Regiment.
When the Special Service Force was renamed 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group in 1995, the squadron was redesignated 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group Headquarters and Signal Squadron.[3]
