Biography
Lieutenant-Colonel Allan Ferriss joined the Canadian Forces in 1997 as a Naval Communications and Information Operator (NCI Op) and served at HMCS Hunter in Windsor, ON prior to moving to Kingston to begin his studies at Queens University. After two years in Kingston, LCol Ferriss transferred to the Royal Military College of Canada as a Communications and Electronics Engineer (CELE (Air)) and graduated in 2003 with a degree in Electrical Engineering.[1]
After completing CELE (Air) training, LCol Ferriss was posted to the Canadian Forces Joint Signal Regiment (CFJSR) in Kingston. In four years at the CFJSR, he held a variety of positions including the Training Officer, the Technical Maintenance Officer, Afghanistan Desk Officer and the Deputy Regimental Operations Officer. In 2007, LCol Ferriss deployed to Camp Mirage and Kandahar as the CFJSR project lead for the Transportable Local Area Network (Unclassified) (TLAN(U)) upgrade project were he led a team of 10 soldiers overseas to upgrade and migrate the TLAN(U) system. He deployed again in 2009 as a United Nations Military Observer (UNMO) in support of OP SAFARI (Sudan) and played a pivotal role as the UNMO Sector Operations Officer in the contingency planning for the Abyei Boarder Commission decision in August 2009. Upon returning to Canada, he was posted to the Canadian Forces School of Communications and Electronics (CFSCE) as the Adjutant and in June 2010, he assumed the position of Officer Commanding Support Squadron, CFSCE. After command, LCol Ferriss was afforded the opportunity to return to RMC to complete his Masters of Business Administration (MBA) and the Joint Command & Staff Programme (JCSP) in Toronto. In 2014, he assumed Command of 8 Air Communications and Control Squadron and oversaw the transition of the unit from 8 Wing to 2 Wing. In 2016, he was posted to Ottawa as Executive Assist to COS(IM) and shortly thereafter promoted to his current rank and transitioned into the role of Director Information Management Project Planning and Control followed by two years and the Royal Canadian Air Force Aerospace Warfare Centre. He then deployed as the Operations Officer on Op PRESENCE, the CAF mission in MALI.
LCol Ferriss holds Professional Engineers of Ontario (P. Eng) and Project Management Professional (PMP) designations. He currently lives in Belleville, ON with his wife Janeen and two children Lauren (11) and Nathan (8). LCol Ferriss enjoys coaching youth hockey and soccer and travelling with his family.
