Active | 1 May 1958 – 1 December 1972 |
Garrison/HQ | Camp Petawawa Ontario |
Nickname | 2 Sig Sqn |
2 Signal Squadron was authorized effective 1 May 1958 and initially formed and located at Camp Borden, Ontario.[1] From there, the unit was moved to Camp Petawawa effective 1 August 1960[2] where it and its successors have remained to date.
In August 1961, 2 Airborne Signal Troop was disbanded and the role of providing parachutists was transferred to 2 Signal Squadron. Twice 2 Airborne Troop of 2 Signal Squadron suffered casualties in training. The first was the 6th of January 1963 when L/Cpl R.H. Prince was killed in a training jump at Camp Borden.[3] The second was on 8 May 1968 when wind carried parachutists at Camp Petawawa over the Ottawa River and seven drowned including four from 2 Signal Squadron: Corporal D.W. Clements, Corporal D.H. Fields, Corporal R.J.G. Knight and Corporal P.G. Misener. The second tragedy is marked with a memorial on Wegner Point and an annual ceremony.
On 5 October 1971, during Exercise Running Jump at CFB Gagetown, Sigmn Amiro, Sigmn Brown and Sigmn Enman were killed when the quarter-ton jeep they were driving in collided with a five-ton truck in fog.
Effective 1 December 1972 2 Signal Squadron was amalgamated with 2 Combat Group Headquarters to form 2 Combat Group Headquarters and Signal Squadron.[4][5]
