The Wireless Remote Control Unit A was used to operate either a Wireless Set No. 1 or a Wireless Set No. 11 from a remote location via a line connection. It allows a user to operate the radio in either the voice (R/T) or Morse (C/W) mode as well as providing an intercommunication capability between the local and remote operators and with a telephone exchange.[1]

The unit has a local battery telephone set, a Morse key, a signalling/calling buzzer, a hand microphone and a receiving headset. To operate, two units are needed: a local unit that connects to the radio via a Connector Plug No. 1 Mk.II and a remote unit, also called the distant unit, for use by the operator at the remote location. The units can be separated by up to 200 yards and are connected by field cable (line).

The Wireless Remote Control Unit A was issued as a replacement for the earlier Control Unit for Wireless Set No. 1 and provided two improvements: Provision for connection to a buzzer call switchboard and, a more sensitive type of microphone was used thereby reducing the number of dry cells needed from three to two.[2]
