Quartier Général et Escadron des Transmissions 5e Groupe-Brigade du Canada (QG ET 5e GBC) was redesignated from Quartier Général et Escadron des transmissions du 5e Groupement de Combat effective 1 April 1977 when the Canadian Combat Groups were redesignated Brigade Groups.[1]
The naming of the unit varied slightly over time and it isn't known if this was consciously done or as a result of poor staff duties. In 1978 the unit names, now in bilingual format were stated as "5 Canadian Brigade Group Headquarters and Signal Squadron" (5 CBG HQ & Sig Sqn) in English and "Escadron du quartier general et des transmissions du 5e Groupe-brigade" (EQGT 5e GBC)] in French[2] In 1984 the French version of the unit full name and abbreviation was stated differently as "Quartier général et Escadron des transmissions du 5e Groupe-brigade du Canada" (QG ET 5 GBC).[3]
When Canada redesignated the Brigade Groups to Mechanized Brigades, the unit was redesignated 5 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Headquarters and Signal Squadron (fr: Quartier général et Escadron des transmissions de la 5e Brigade mécanisée du Canada).[4]
