John Llewellyn "Jack" Collins (8 September 1893 - ????) was a Canadian soldier who served in the Great War as a member of 1st Canadian Divisional Signal Company.

Personal Life

Jack was born at London Ontario on 8 September 1893. His parents were Ira Collins and Dorenda 'Dora' Moody and he may have had one full brother, one full sister and two half-brothers and two half-sisters from his fathers first marriage.[1]

His occupation prior to the war is listed as electrician.

Service

Jack listed previous service with the Canadian Signal Corps and 1st Hussars when he attested for service at Valcartier on 23 September 1914. He proceeded overseas with 1st Canadian Divisional Signal Company and remained with them throughout the war. Initially a 2nd Corporal, he was reduced in rank after being absent without leave in January 1915. That same month records indicate he was assigned to No. 3 Section and proceeded to France on 15 February 1915 with his unit. In March 1916 he was appointed Acting Corporal.

In June 1916 A/Cpl Collins was one of three members of the Canadian Signal Service to receive the newly created Military Medal in its inaugural award list.[2] Unfortunately, a record of the circumstances that led to its award have not yet been located.

In July 1916 he reverted to the rank of Sapper at his own request. He remained a Sapper until 21 April 1918 when he was appointed Lance Corporal. He was discharged 16 May 1919 at Toronto.

Jack served again during the Second World War but it's not known in what capacity. He received the overseas bar to the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal which likely indicates service in the United Kingdom.
