The Bayeux Memorial stands opposite the Bayeux War Cemetery and commemorates more than 1,808 casualties of the Commonwealth forces who died in the Battle of Normandy and have no known grave.[1] The memorial was erected in white stone and bears a Latin epitaph along the frieze in reference to William the Conqueror and the Invasion of England in 1066. The translation reads: “We, once conquered by William, have now set free the Conqueror’s native land.”
